Biblical Theology
'Transforming the World' is not only a central concept in biblical theology but is also practical challenge for each successive Christian generation. Articulating a distinctive biblical approach to ethical issues is crucial if Christians are to (re)gain a hearing on the world stage. At the 2006 triennial conference, the overall theme for the study group will be Biblical Theology and Ethics: methodology and issues.

The Bible has always played a central role in shaping the ethical policy and behaviour of Christians. However, before we can propose a biblical theology of contemporary issues such as race, gender, sexuality and lifestyle, crime and punishment, war and peace, we must engage rigorously with scripture and be open to new ways of understanding the text. The concept of a single 'biblical' ethic is not always easy to maintain and many writers would point to the existence of disparate and conflicting ethical outlooks within the Bible. All sorts of questions arise. For example, how does the Bible function as a source of authority in determining our stance on important ethical issues? Do we need to distinguish between OT and NT outlooks? How do we handle issues where some biblical passages appear to support ethical stances that many would view as inappropriate (e.g., genocide; homosexuality)?

TUESDAY, 4th JULY
9.30 Joint BT/OT session.
